Vaping
In general, e-cigarettes are battery-operated devices designed to enable users to quit smoking cigarettes. Some have refillable tanks, while others have pods. But regardless of their appearance, they all essentially work in the same way.
E-cigarettes have a container filled with a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, propylene glycol, and vegetable glycerin. A battery-powered heating element turns the liquid into a vapor that users inhale when they take a puff from the device.
The use of an e-cigarette is referred to as vaping. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of different types of e-cigarettes on the market.
Cigarettes contain more than 4,000 toxins (known poisons for the body) with more than 50 of these known carcinogens (cancer-causing substances).
Electronic cigarettes do not burn anything, there is no tar production or smoke, and the vapor does not contain those same 4,000 toxins produced by the burning of a cigarette. They have been described by Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos (a cardiology expert) as "significantly safer than smoking."
Research from ASH UK and Professor Robert West has shown that attempts to quit using traditional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) do not offer a higher success rate than quitting smoking without NRT. They have found that the chances of successfully quitting are significantly increased with the use of an electronic cigarette. This has been formally recognized by the Leicester 'Quit' program and by NHS Scotland, which fully supports the use of e-cigs in smoking cessation programs.
Shortly after switching, you’ll notice that you start to breathe easier and your sense of taste and smell returns ... that means you’ll enjoy the flavors of your liquid even more!
Electronic cigarettes are not "harmless," and no manufacturer or seller will tell you that they are. The most significant and well-known substance that causes harm when smoking a cigarette is 'tar.' This substance is not present in electronic cigarettes.
The ingredients in e-liquids are all approved for the food industry, and various studies from across Europe support the idea that it is much less harmful than smoking.
Some people notice that their throat becomes dry; it is advised to stay hydrated while vaping to prevent this. A small minority of vapers react to the "PG" component in the e-liquid. In this case, it is possible to find liquids with a high "VG" concentration to use.
All electronic cigarettes follow a similar principle; essentially, it is a battery that is activated by a button or inhalation. Once the battery is activated, the e-liquid is vaporized.
- In some e-cigarettes, inhalation activates the battery-powered vaporizer. Other types use a manual on/off switch (often via the so-called 5-click safety feature).
- The heating coil in the atomizer heats the e-liquid that contains nicotine.
- The e-liquid is vaporized and inhaled. The produced vapor is mostly water vapor.
A rule of thumb is that the more air the coil receives, the more vapor is produced. The smaller the chamber in which the coil is located, the greater the flavor.
Furthermore, high "PG" e-liquids will provide a stronger flavor, while high "VG" e-liquids will produce more vapor.
The different types of e-cigarettes available:
- Disposable e-cigarette (cigalike)
- Vape pens (2nd generation)
- Rechargeable mini e-cigarette (2nd generation)
- Mid-size e-cigarette (3rd generation)
- Regulated box mod (3rd generation)
- Mechanical box mod (3rd generation)
- Squonker (3rd generation)
- Pod vape e-cigarette (4th generation)
The cigalike is a very simple device. It became popular because it resembles cigarettes and is very easy to use. The downside of these devices compared to newer models is that they are not reusable and are less efficient in delivering flavor, battery life, or vapor production. These devices are not available at EHALE.
The demand for these devices has significantly declined in popularity in recent years because there are now various, better alternatives available, such as the newer pod systems. A pod system is the closest in size and use to a cigalike. The biggest difference is that pod systems are reusable and often refillable.
Within pod systems, there are two main groups: open and closed systems. Open systems like a Caliburn or Vaporesso Zero use refillable cartridges (pods) that you can fill with your favorite liquid. Closed systems like HEXA use pre-filled pods that cannot be refilled. It is therefore a click-and-play option, very popular among beginner vapers.
Devices from the second generation, such as the eGo, Twist, Evod, Protank Mini, and Nautilus, are ideal starter kits for the novice vaper, but they have been improved to the point that many vapers stick with them or keep them as a backup or second device for on-the-go use because they are so easy to use.
The advantage of newer generation devices ((mech) mods & squonkers) is that you can personalize various settings. From resistance to wattage to nicotine strength. Although they are initially more expensive to buy and more complex to use compared to a pod system or starter kit, they tend to be more cost-effective in the long run. Finally, they are completely safe as long as you use them correctly.
The Atomizer
An atomizer or coil is the component that ensures your e-liquid is vaporized. A coil consists of a wire that forms your resistance and cotton (wick) or ceramic. The cotton or ceramic element absorbs the e-liquid and allows your wire to vaporize it by heating it up. The coil needs to be replaced when the flavor diminishes and/or the vapor production decreases.
The Clearomizer
A clearomizer or tank is the upper part of your electronic cigarette and consists of 3 parts: the tank, the coil, and the mouthpiece (driptip). The tank needs to be filled with e-liquid.
The Battery / Mod
The battery or mod is the lower part of the electronic cigarette and provides power to the clearomizer. A battery usually has few adjustable options. A box mod, on the other hand, typically contains an advanced chip that gives you many adjustable options. This allows you to adjust your wattage (VW) or switch to temperature control (TC). A box mod usually does not come with a battery; you purchase that separately.
Wattage
The wattage that you set or do not set in your electronic cigarette determines the power with which your e-liquid is vaporized. The higher the wattage, the more powerful the vapor you receive.
Temperature Control
Here, you can set the maximum temperature that the coil may reach. In box mods with temperature control, the voltage is automatically regulated. With correct use of the temperature control function, you can prevent dry hits (a burnt taste). However, you need special coils with a different type of wire, such as Nickel (Ni200), Titanium (Ti), Stainless Steel (SS), or NiChrome (Ni80).
A Drip Tip
A Drip Tip is the mouthpiece of your clearomizer (tank).
A 510 or eGo Connection
eGo and 510 are types of screw threads. In a battery, an eGo thread is the outer thread while the 510 connection is the inner thread. There are various batteries that have both screw threads. However, atomizers often have only one of the two connections.
TIP: If your atomizer has a 510 connection and your battery has both connections, you can connect your atomizer to your battery, but it is best to purchase an eGo beauty ring to finish it off nicely.
Everyone needs to replace a part from time to time. This completely depends on you, how often you use the device, at what wattage, and which e-liquid you use for it.
When should you do this?
You will notice that you need to replace your coil when the flavor of your liquid becomes less intense. If there is still e-liquid in your clearomizer and you taste a burnt flavor, it is time to replace your coil.
Batteries
If you have an electronic cigarette with a built-in battery, it is recommended to charge it with the provided cable. This comes with a USB connection. To preserve the lifespan of this battery, it is best to charge it on the computer instead of using a fast charger.
If you have a box mod that is equipped with one or more external batteries, it is recommended to charge them externally using a battery charger. This is better for both the lifespan and the software of your box mod.
How long a battery lasts between charges is indicated by the specified number for mAh (milliampere-hour). However, performance can vary depending on the conditions. The higher the mAh number, the longer the battery lasts before it needs to be charged.
Li-ion batteries release energy in a controlled manner; when you charge them, the charger reverses this reaction and the energy is stored. Due to the chemical composition of the battery, it is vital that a suitable charger is used under safe conditions. To ensure your safety, never charge a battery in heat or without supervision, and it is best not to discharge it.
An e-liquid is the liquid used in electronic cigarettes. It provides both the flavor and vapor experience. Without e-liquid, you cannot use an electronic cigarette. An e-liquid always consists of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, a flavor, and optionally nicotine.
- Propylene Glycol (PG) provides the so-called 'throat hit' (the tickle in the throat) and is the carrier of the flavor and any nicotine. This substance is also used in the food industry and cosmetics. The WHO classifies this substance as non-toxic, making it safe when it comes into contact with skin, is injected, or swallowed. However, we do not recommend using it for purposes other than intended.
- Vegetable Glycerin (VG) determines the amount of vapor produced. The higher the VG content, the thicker the vapor produced. This substance is also used in various medical and cosmetic preparations, including toothpaste and mouthwash.
- Flavors are (usually) natural flavor concentrates that are water-soluble. They are mainly produced by companies in the food sector that manufacture them to enhance food. They can range from tobacco to fruit to donuts and candy. Many commercial liquids also contain sweeteners. Today, there are approximately 7,000 different flavors that can be used together or separately for liquids.
- Nicotine is an addictive substance. Liquids are available in all strengths from 0–20 mg/ml (maximum permitted standard in Europe). Most liquids are sold without nicotine; these can then be mixed with nicotine boosters. Two types of nicotine are used in e-liquids: freebase nicotine and nicotine salt. Today, there are also products that work with so-called hybrid nicotine.
Freebase Nicotine vs Nicotine Salt
Freebase nicotine is probably the most commonly used form of nicotine. It is nicotine in its purest form and therefore has a higher pH value. Freebase liquids can therefore come in different VG/PG ratios. The most common nicotine levels for liquids using freebase nicotine are 0, 3, 6, and 12 mg/ml with a 70/30 VG/PG ratio.
The biggest disadvantage of freebase nicotine, and also the biggest difference from nicotine salts, lies in the delivery method of nicotine at higher strengths. The higher the freebase nicotine strength, the harsher (and more unpleasant) the throat hit; therefore, it is not recommended to use freebase nicotine higher than 12 mg/ml.
Nicotine salt is the natural state in which nicotine is found in tobacco leaves, with a lower pH value. The advantages of nicotine salt (nic salts) are satisfaction, smoother hits, richer flavor, and usually a cheaper price. Nic salts usually have a 50/50 VG/PG ratio. Nicotine salts also come in different nicotine levels from 0–20 mg/ml. Due to the smoother vaping experience at higher strengths, they are the 'go-to' solution for smokers who want to quit cigarettes with the help of vaping products.
For some vapers, however, nic salts are too strong. They also lack the ability to create huge clouds, making freebase liquid the first choice for hobby vaping.
And what about hybrid nicotine?
Hybrid nicotine is the most recent form of nicotine used in vaping products. It is only used in a handful of products so far. Hybrid nicotine is a mix of freebase nicotine and nic salt and was created by the Belgian company HEXA.
For each of their six flavors, they created a unique combination of freebase nicotine and nic salt. This allowed them to combine the pleasant vaping experience and rich flavor of nic salts with the throat hit of freebase nicotine for maximum satisfaction. The best of both worlds.
As a result, they not only became the most popular e-cigarette in Belgium and the Netherlands, but with their creative recipes, they also inspired brands like Riot Squad to come up with their own hybrid nicotine mixes. All this, under the approving eye of many smokers who finally found a vaping product with which they can quit cigarettes for good.
As this group of satisfied (ex-)smokers grows, we will likely see more and more products with hybrid nicotine entering the market in the future.
How much nicotine should I start with?
The amount of nicotine a new vaper should start with depends on their smoking habits. When someone is used to smoking light cigarettes, it is recommended to choose between 6 mg and 10 mg. Smokers who consume more than 12 cigarettes per day are advised to start with 20 mg and then gradually reduce.
How long does a 10ml bottle last?
This depends on various factors such as usage (number of puffs), the wattage of the electronic cigarette, and the type of coil used. A Sub Ohm coil will consume more than a coil with a higher resistance.
Can I use all e-liquids in any electronic cigarette?
It is recommended to use an e-liquid with a 50VG/50PG content for most Starter Kits. If you use an e-liquid with a higher VG content, there is a chance the coil will clog quickly. For clearomizers with a larger coil, it is recommended to use an e-liquid with a higher VG content.
How do I put e-liquid in my clearomizer?
This varies with most tanks. Review the instructions in the manual of the electronic cigarette or clearomizer. It is recommended to moisten the coil with e-liquid before using it for the first time. Also, the first time you can wait 10 minutes so that your coil has time to absorb the e-liquid.
Can I mix different e-liquids together?
This is certainly possible. Be aware that in terms of flavor, this can turn out very well but also very badly. It is also possible to mix different nicotine levels together. For example, you can mix a 0 mg e-liquid with a 6 mg e-liquid. When you take the same amount of both to mix, you will end up with 3 mg nicotine.
Where is the best place to store e-liquid?
The most important rule when storing e-liquid is to keep it out of reach of children and/or pets. Additionally, it is advisable to store liquids in a dark place at room temperature.
Do e-liquids have an expiration date?
Every e-liquid has an expiration date. A liquid stays good for approximately 2 years. The flavor will diminish after 1 to 1.5 years. The e-liquid will not be spoiled immediately after the expiration date, but its use is not recommended.
Do-It-Yourself (DIY)
Do-It-Yourself. What does that involve?
You're a true do-it-yourselfer. Making your own e-liquids by mixing base (a ratio of VG and/or PG), flavors (the flavor substances), and optionally nicotine.
What is a flavor concentrate?
The flavor is the taste you add. With us, you have the option to order from a wide assortment of fruit flavors but also tobacco and even dessert flavors.
What is base?
This is the base liquid used to make an e-liquid. You have the option to choose base with different VG/PG content or only VG content. Base contains no flavoring and is therefore neutral in taste.
How do I mix flavor with base?
For mixing flavor, it's best to use a needle syringe to take the correct amount. It is recommended to use 10 to 20 percent flavor for your own e-liquid. After mixing, it is recommended to let your e-liquid steep for 1 to 2 weeks. If you use more than 20 percent flavor, you get a Shake & Vape.
Dry hits
They are unpleasant and are caused by the coil not receiving liquid quickly enough. This can happen when a tank has just been refilled or when switching to a liquid with a higher VG percentage. It can also occur if a variable voltage/wattage device is set too high, as it vaporizes the liquid faster than the wick can supply fresh juice to the coil.
To prevent this, it’s best to prime the coil by giving it time to saturate and taking dry puffs (sucking without firing the battery). Additionally, you can start with a lower voltage and gradually increase it.
A warm battery
This can simply be a matter of excessive use. The battery heats up due to the heat conducted by the coil. It is advisable to give the battery time to cool down - if this is a recurring issue, it’s best not to use the device anymore and have it checked.
The device won’t fire
The simplest solution is to check if it is turned on. Then check if the battery is charged. If neither of these options resolves the issue, it’s best not to use the device anymore, especially if the battery is overheating. A battery that is too warm usually indicates a short circuit. In this situation, the battery discharges faster than expected.
A short-circuited battery should not be used anymore.
Cleaning and maintenance
Clean all parts with lukewarm water and let them drain well. It is very important that the parts are completely dry before being reused. If this is not the case, the wicks will retain water, resulting in a bland taste in the vapor. To clean the device itself, it’s best to use a damp tissue or a cotton swab - do not use cleaning products; isopropanol/isopropyl alcohol may be used, however.
Leaking clearomizer
Sometimes it can happen that liquid gets in your mouth. It is not harmful, but it is certainly not intended. When this does happen, it may be that the tank is being pulled too hard or that the coil was over-saturated.
If the clearomizer is leaking from the air holes, it’s best to completely disassemble your clearomizer to check if all parts are intact. Make sure that all O-rings are properly secured. Then screw all parts back together.
